The Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) has recently announced the approval of an updated voluntary window covering safety standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). This revised safety standard, ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022, aims to enhance safety by eliminating free-hanging cords and connectors that can potentially cause accidents and injuries. The window coverings included in this ruling are cellular, pleated, Roman, solar, and vertical shades.
What Does This Mean?
A new national safety standard requires most window coverings sold in the United States to be cordless or to use cords that are short, secured, or otherwise out of reach. The goal is to prevent accidents—especially those involving children—by removing dangerous, free-hanging cords.
When Does ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022 Take Effect?
The new rule goes into effect on June 1, 2024. From that date forward, all companies that manufacture, distribute, or sell window coverings in the U.S. must follow the updated safety requirements. This includes eliminating free-hanging operating cords, tilt cords, and multiple cord connectors.
